Arriving in good time
During the festive season in December, traffic tends to get heavily congested in Ljubljana. Visitors are advised to leave home earlier than usual to avoid arriving late.
Das geheime Leben der Bäume
Germany, 2020, 101'
By Jörg Adolph
In his bestselling book, The Hidden Life of Trees (2015), forester Peter Wohlleben writes about his way of “listening to nature”, vividly describing his theory that trees can communicate with each other. He feels that trees are social beings, show solidarity and cohesion, and have the ability to nurse their young and feel pain. He believes that a forest is capable of self-regeneration. All it needs is time – and no human intervention. People make plans for the coming years or decades; trees make plans for the coming centuries.
To be honest, I only read it after I had been given it as a present for the second time, but then in one go. I was incredibly impressed by the way Peter Wohlleben took the reader by the hand and guided them through the forest. It was like a guided tour, a walk in the forest. Although it covers such large areas of Germany, the forest is a bit like terra incognita. Very few people have a real relationship and access to it. Wohlleben wrote a forest guide like Jacques Cousteau once did for the ocean.
