Woody Allen's 50th film is a comedy about the important role chance and luck play in our lives.
Fanny and Jean seem like the ideal married couple-they're both professionally accomplished, they live in a gorgeous apartment in an exclusive neighbourhood of Paris, and they seem to be in love just as much as they were when they first met. But when Fanny accidentally bumps into Alain, a former high school classmate who still carries the torch for her, she's swept off her feet. She re-examines her expectations in life. Fanny and Alain soon see each other again and get closer and closer.
When I was younger the films that were most impressive to us when we were all starting out and aiming to be filmmakers were European cinema, all the French films, Italian films, Swedish films. We all wanted to make films like Europeans. I was going to make this film with two Americans living in Paris and I thought to myself it's my 50th film and I love Paris so much that I'll make it in French. I don't speak French but that didn't bother me because all the actors spoke English. I had a wonderful time and then felt I was a genuine European filmmaker.
