Arriving in good time
During the festive season in December, traffic tends to get heavily congested in Ljubljana. Visitors are advised to leave home earlier than usual to avoid arriving late.
The autumn edition of the Cankarjevi torki Series is launching with two compelling Slovenian artists who have recently embarked on solo careers. And have been remarkably successful at it as well. They’ll be sharing the stage on 5 October. Whether they’re also conspiring to play something together, remains to be heard.
For Slovenian scenesters and music fans of a certain age, let's say from 30 to 70, Niko Novak needs little introduction: hugely charismatic frontman of punked-up rock n rollers Dicky B Hardy, one half of dirty blues duo Incurabili, and now a bass-playing solo artist with four albums of sly, downbeat, tender and occasionally vicious music now behind him (and two more in the can). This series of late-night, morning-after stories of Berlin and Ljubljana have been an open secret for the last couple of years in the Slovenian capital. It was high time for a physical release, vinyl only of course, so here it comes. Pankow, the third in the series, was produced in London by the legendary Jim Jones (Thee Hypnotics, Jim Jones Revue) and has been released on the new Nashville Stardust label. Tales of redemption that never quite arrives, of pride in and before a fall, in a voice of cracked, awesome beauty. Has he mellowed? Yes. And no. Key track: Honest People Are Scum.
Vocalist and guitarist Jana Beltran is one half of the duo All Strings Detached (Septet, 2020). She released a solo debut, Amoretti, last year. As well as compositions from her upcoming, second solo album, Jana has other treats in store for the Cankarjevi torki concert.
