Orchestre de la Suisse Romande, a prominent part of the international music scene for more than a century, has built up an international reputation thanks to its historic recordings and interpretations of the 20th-century French and Russian repertories. In partnership with the legendary record company Decca, the orchestra has recorded over a hundred discs, giving rise to truly legendary recordings and enhancing its iconic status. The orchestra released the label’s first official stereo classical recording in 1954 (symphonic suite Antar by Rimsky-Korsakov). OSR has actively contributed to the history of music through discovering and supporting contemporary composer, and giving world premieres of works by some of the most illustrious 20th-century figures (Stravinsky, Honegger, Britten, Lutosławski, Milhaud...) in the interwar period. The orchestra today writes new success stories under its Music and Artistic Director, Jonathan Nott, known for the power, clarity, and depth of his interpretations.
While Shostakovich's violin concerto allows Viktoria Mullova, a frequent guest at Slovenian concert venues, to demonstrate her technical, physical and emotional prowess, Strauss's great mythical Zarathustra is a perfect vehicle for expressing the orchestra’s narrative power.
I’m always looking for something that will reflect the world in which we live. That, I think, is the reason for music. It takes us from one place and puts us somewhere else we’ve never been before. Jonathan Nott
The Suisse Romande Orchestra plays beautifully, sensitively and agilely for its music director, the players at-one with the works’ ebb, flow and luminosity. Colin Anderson
Mulova's sound is rich but not creamy, and never lapses into mere beauty for its own sake. Her spectrum of tones, from the merest whisper to full-throated songfulness in lyrical passages, and range of nuance compel the attention throughout. Gramophone
