Temperamental as Always

It is human nature to withstand. To resist and hope for the better. No matter how difficult life gets or how grim the predictions are. And that applies to all of us. The only difference is that we show this incredible human duality differently. We express it less or more openly, which depends firstly on our personalities and secondly on our origins. The unwritten rule is: the further south one goes, the more expressive and passionate this duality, the greater both the pain and the joy. And thus, we arrive at flamenco. And Bi flamenko, the festival’s third edition. As delectable as the first two editions. Temperamental as always. Here for you to pick and choose: the sensibility of Leonor Leal and her exquisite Nocturno; a counterpoint composed of two parts that give birth to a third one in Ana Pandur’s Party Box; the refinement of movement and music in Urška Centa’s Sinsonte. And, of course, the powerful, strong yet gentle rhythms of the one and only, Israel Galván, in his theatre-music feat, El amor brujo.

However, we will begin with the deep Romany tradition exemplified by Pepe Habichuela, the chieftain of the famed Carmona clan. The festival’s opening day includes a film, concert and talk dedicated to the artist. Pepe’s line-up features his nephew, Josemi, on guitar, and the brilliant percussionist Bandolero. While belonging mainly to guitarists, Friday night will nevertheless reach its culmination in a show by the best flamenco voice of her generation, Mayte Martín, as subtle and gentle as lace. Giving a taste of some local musicianship, the virtuosic flamenco guitarist Vito Marenče and his Slovenian-Spanish band will showcase their skills. Not only a festival of artists, Bi flamenko also seeks to engage the audiences, inviting them to test their knowledge and show their enthusiasm at free and open workshops. And because flamenco and jazz form a happy marriage, the festival will conclude with jazz-flamenco that reaches all the way to Cuba, an exciting genre played by the inspiring pianist Daniel García Diego’s Spanish-Cuban trio.

Join us in saying farewell to winter with some hot flamenco!
